Toxins – Health Risks
Aired on March 15, 2019
Episode Description
Modern life exposes us to chemicals that may be subtly or profoundly impacting our health. We absorb toxins in what we eat and drink, the products we put on our skin, and what we surround ourselves with in our homes. Learn about the toxins we put in us in our food, the toxins we put on use, and the chemicals that surround us. The cumulative effect of these toxins, which include glyphosate, EMF, and the toxins we put in and on our bodies is a contributing factor to the rise of chronic diseases in adults and in children
- She has research on non-toxic products
There are 100,000 chemicals that are used that are not studied for their health effects
Her story
- In Europe they. Use the precautionary principle that they don’t put potentially hazardous chemicals on the market
- EPA never studied
- If they do test they don’t test I the
- A fragrance can have up to 4000 chemicals in it
- There are chemicals in our food that are not allowed in Europe
- It is important to know
- Autism, anxiety, depression
- Air fresheners have dangerous chemicals as well
- She believes a big piece of this disease problem comes from these chemicals
- These don’t have to be labeled because of industry secrets
- Natural has many chemicals that don’t have to be labeled because they are industry “secrets
- 17 years ago she was diagnosed with a giant swannoma tumour in her chest
- She simplified her life
- Less eating out as it is not known what is in food when we eat out.
- She noticed many lotions had unpronounceable chemicals.
- These chemicals very quickly enter our blood stream
- She uses baking soda for deodorants
- Most deodorants have glycol p=product which is found in anti freeze
- She stopped using windex which had precautionary statement that is dangerous to animals
- She now cleans with hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and white vinegar
- She simplified her life
Chemicals we put on us
- We are not only putting these chemicals on us, but we are putting them in us as they go into the blood stream where they impact our moods, emotions
- Some of these chemicals have substances that help pull them into the body
- Revlon and other chemicals reformulate products taking out many chemicals to meet the European more stringent requirements
- These creams go into the body and have substances to enhance absorption into the body.
- These substances go into the blood stream, the liver
- These substances affect our moods and emotions
- These substances create a toxic body burden which stress our livers
- There is a back up of these chemicals in our body as the liver is not able to clear the
- Examples
- Sunscreen
- Some lipsticks have lead in some colours of lipstick
- Parabens are endocrine disruptors
- Mt Sinai School of Medicine studies show parabens
- Cause reproductive and development disorders
- Contributes to learning disorders such as attention deficit
- Leads to immune dysfunction
- One study showed that over 90 % of breast cancer tumours contain parabens
- Mt Sinai School of Medicine studies show parabens
- DEA used as thickening and foaming agent
- Is linked with stomach, esophagus, liver, and bladder cancers
- The Agency for Research on Cancer recommends it be considered a carcinogen
- 1-4 dioxane
- Is in most natural products including Whole Foods 365
- In lipsticks, sunscreens, shampoos, mascara, deodorants, body scrubs
- This helps to release formaldehyde
- Phthalates
- Helps fragrances linger longer
- Found in deodorants, hair mousse, hair gels hair sprays, body care products, nail polish (so it chips less), mascara, lipsticks
- Is a plasticizer
- 2006 Study showed mothers exposed to this were more likely to have babies with undescended testes and smaller penises
- 2008 Study showed that at least 80 % of babies had at least seven different phthalates in their urine
- Triclosan found in hand wash
- Studies show washing with soap and water is more effective
- As an antibiotic, it causes resistance to antibiotics
- Plasticizers and mercury are put in mascara
- These affect hormones
- This important for women of childbearing age
- Manufacturers can put anything they want in their products without having to prove it is safe
- The CIR the cosmetic regulatory review is in charge of regulating these chemicals and is funded by the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (Personal Care Products Council
- That is the industry is paying to regulate its own products
- These affect hormones
Food and Items We Put in Us
- As Europeans do not allow many of the chemicals found in US food, US companies take these chemicals out of food destined to Europe
- Japanese send their moldy coffee with carcinogenic ochratoxin to US
- She likes purity coffee. Is organic and tested for mold
- Some foods are moldy
- EMF will exacerbate this
- Aspartame
- Donald Rumsfield was paid to get this chemical approved by the FDA although the FDA knew it caused cancer
- Is a neurotoxin. Causes dizzy spells
- Is in soft drinks, gums, candies
- Artificial colouring is associated with temper tantrums in children
- Children’s vitamins may have artificial colouring
- Preservatives in food for example calcium propionate in bread
- Calcium propionate is a mold inhibitor
- Causes AHDH behavior in rats
- Wheat sprayed with glyphosate before harvest to dry it out.
- Glyphosate affects the shikimate pathway, will interfere with making the aromatic amines (such as tryptophan), will cause leaky gut and leaky brain, and interferes with detoxification
- Leads to a leaky gut
- Leads to a leaky blood brain barrier which will result in behavioural problems
- Toothpaste
- If a child eats a whole tube of toothpaste it is toxic if not lethal
- Contains fluoride not good for us
- Is oK on a tooth, but not in our body
- Triclosan found in Colgate Toothpaste
- Very toxic antibacterial chemical
- Contains dyes and artificial flavours
- She likes David’s Toothpaste
- Plastics
- BPA free most likely have an equally toxic substance called BPS
- It weakens gender differences
- Decreases sperm
- Stimulates prostate cancer
- Causes ADHD
- 2005 Yale study found BPA linked to learning disabilities
- Linked to neurodegenerative diseases in humans
- Is associated with brain problems, mood disorders in monkeys
- The plastic goes into the food and into our bodies
- Microwaving in plastic creates a plastic sauce
- Found in cans
- Environmental Working Group Study
- 1/10 cans of food and 1/3 cans infant formulas had a BPA exposure that was greater than 200 times the US government’s recommended safe levels of exposure
- Get an extra dose in canned tomatoes as the acidity leaches out the BPA
- Buy tomato sauces in glass jars
- Found in grocery receipts
- Environmental Working Group Study
- Some restaurants microwave/ boil their food in plastic potatoes
- Some of the waitresses have been instructed to mop up the melted plastic before serving it to the customer
- More likely in big, low price restaurant chains
- Use glass or metal drinking containers
- Some of the waitresses have been instructed to mop up the melted plastic before serving it to the customer
- Whole Foods uses Canola Oil (a highly processed motor oil
- Sprouts added cellulose to turkey burgers
- Grass fed animals can be eating in fields sprayed with glyphosate
- Need organic and grass fed/ pastured
- BPA free most likely have an equally toxic substance called BPS
- Japanese send their moldy coffee with carcinogenic ochratoxin to US
Toxins Around Us
- Carpets, upholstery off gases toxic chemicals especially from carpets not made from natural fibers
- Eg, nylon carpets attached with glue
- Can harbor mold
- Crib deaths have been due to off gassing chemicals from baby mattresses
- As these mattresses age and sag, some of these chemicals are released.
- Water resistant chemicals are recognized as carcinogens
- Get a natural mattress (naturopedic) or get a mattress topper
- Wool topper
- keeps moisture away
- Keeps cool in winter and warm in summer
- Latex foam is. Made from petroleum
- Get a natural foam
- Paint
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- EMF
- Disrupts the blood brain barrier, gut barrier interferes with inter cellular communication, interferes with the calcium channels
- Appliances that are not turned on, yield a field
- Suggestions
- Turn wi fi off at night
- At night the body heals and cleanses
- Can unplug everything at night.
- Can use ethernet
- Note Occupy Health Programs by Lena Pu on 5 G, Guy Hudson and Devra Davis
- Wool topper
- Eg, nylon carpets attached with glue
Other
- Toxins are stored in fat
- These toxins come out as lose weight
- So can feel worse as lose weight
- Lead is stored in bone and comes out when women go through menopause and lose bone
What to be cautious of
- For Chemicals we put in our Mouths
- Preservatives
- Natural
- “Made with”. This could contain only one percent or one drop of the item
- For Chemicals, we put on us
- Any three capital letter item such as DEA or MEA – should be avoided
- Fragrance should be avoided
- The words “natural” and “non-toxic” are meaningless
- She recommends trying an experiment of taking a product away and notice how you feel when you read it back into your life
- For example, eliminating fragrances can eliminate sins conditions
- Be aware of additives that are not healthy for our bodies
- The effects of these chemicals can be synergistic meaning the damage is more that the sum of the damages
- Is important to detoxify
- Is important to test for toxins such as mercury and glyphosate
- Shop at local markets
- With meat, it needs to be grass fed AND organic (otherwise the animals can be eating meat consuming grass sprayed with glyphosate
- Avoid canned foods especially acidic foods such as tomatoes: use glass
- Drink plenty of filtered water not tap water which has pharmaceutical webs
- Eat real, non-processed food
- Her next food detox will be through May 6 through May 10
