Haskap berries: a traditional super berry

Aired On: November 4, 2022

Episode Description

Haskap berries, known as honey berries in the USA, are berries that were used in traditional medicine by the Ainu people, that are high in nutrition. They were known as the “elixir of life”; botany-edible blue honeysuckle, or double berry. They contain three times the antioxidants and four times the anthocyanins of blueberries. They are high in Vitamin C and have great taste. Anthocyanins are associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, neuroprotective and antidiabetic properties Results showed improvements in cognition -word recall and recognition i.e. episodic memory effects- and diastolic blood pressure, with higher doses appearing more effective.) Other studies in athletes showed improved exercise endurance, and improvement in running times. Proposed mechanisms include decreasing exercise-induced inflammation and oxidative stress or improving vascular function and oxygen utilization or a combination of the three. • Helps mitochondria from inc 3 CG, decreased lactic acid in muscles
    • 3CG enhance exercise performance activated lactate metabolism,  and by helping mitochondria
  • Have high antioxidants, antiinflammatory, cross blood brain barrier
  • Associated with heart and brain protection and has antidiabetic properties.
  • Reduces risk of diabetes
    • Inhibit alpha aminase, alpha —-, an PP4
    • Work in the same way as common antidiabetic drugs
  • Vasodilates vessels (by increasing nitric oxide
    • Improves erectile dysfunction
  • Are neuro protective
  • Increases nitric acid and improves blood flow
  • High intake is associated with reduced other diseases
  • Mproves exercise performance
    • Improve exercise induced stress
    • Improves exercise induced inflammation
    • Improves vascular function
  • Each has two twin blue, purple berries inside wrapped in outer blue skin
  • Has higher nutritional value
    • Has three times antioxidants as blueberries
    • Has four times anthocyanins as blueberries
  • They grew these in Nova Scotia, Canada and learned how to freeze dry them
    • They commission studies
    • They won the best new juice award in 2013
    • They freeze the berries after harvest to preserve nutrients
      • Preserve very high amounts of anthocyanin
      • Preserves a lot of vitamin C
      • She believes the dry freezing powder retains high amounts of the nutrients.
    • They freeze dry and put in 100 g pouch
      • Contains about 100 berries
      • Can be used in yogurt, cereal, shakes, teas
    • Haskap berries take five to six years to grow
      • They need a cold winter

  • They are an edible blue honey suckle. (known as honeyberries in US
  • This berry has been used for centuries in traditional medicine

Anthocyanins

  • Have high antioxidants, anti inflammatory, cross blood brain barrier
  • Associated with heart and brain protection and has antidiabetic properties.
  • Reduces risk of diabetes and erectile dysfunction
  • Vasodilates vessels (by increasing nitric oxide
  • Are neuro protective
  • Increases nitric acid and improves blood flow
  • High intake is associated with reduced other diseases
  • Anthocyanins naturally occurring plant pigments that give plants red and, blue purple colours
    • Antho means flower; cyanins means blue
    •  In flavonoid group
  • Suggested 50 mg anthocyanins per day
    • 1/3 cup blueberries per day
    • In US eat about 3 mg per day. Other countries up to 43 mg per day
    • More eaten in blue zones (where people live longer
      • Okinawa  eats purple sweet potatoes
      • Blueberries are greenish in inside; haskap berries are crimson inside containing more anthocyanins/ antioxidants
        • Have 25 small amounts of anthocyanins
      • dementia predicted to be 86 million in 2030
      • reduces risk of cognitive decline
        • 40 % dementia could have been prevented
          • By life style choices, blood pressure, obesity
        • Significant improvement in memory
        • Some studies show improvement in executive function
        • Epidemiological study (Devore in 2012) followed women over the age of 70 over 6 years, higher. delayed cognitive aging by 2 ½ years
        • 2020 study at Tufts Univ followed 2100 adults over 20 years, Eating no berries had four fold increase risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia compared to higher eaters of berries
        • Study 200,000 people followed up to 24 years, 22 mg anthocyanins per diet. Had 15 % reduction in risk of getting type II diabetes
        • Erectile dysfunction 25,000 men followed for 10 years had 9 – 10 % reduction in erectile dysfunction
        • Double blind study at Univ Redding looking at acute effects of haskap berry extract different doses’’
          • Studied 20 adults improvement in cognition , word recall and word recall, improved diastolic blood pressure
        • Study looking at exercise endurance in runners. Looked at 30 y recreational runners .  There was improve exercise endurance at low intensity
          • Maximum exertion showed improved times, fatigue took longer, improved 5 Km times
    • Helps with nitric oxide helps with endothelium (inside layer of blood vessels) and can dilate blood vessels increasing nutrient delivery
